A Career Change is a Life Change

Sometimes you have to break out, so you can break in.

A year ago I decided to change careers from punching numbers to a more creative field. I wouldn’t consider myself a risk taker, so it hasn’t been an easy transition. There’s worry about money and stability, but I can at least say that the transition has been a natural one, if not exciting. Stepping out of my comfort zone, I discovered, is more rewarding than what I am used to, which is perpetually doing what is safe. There is always a gamble when you quit your day job to pursue a more satisfying career, and in my case, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do at first. But, with a little mental push, I just started doing things I enjoyed, like delving deeper into writing and design, which has led me to marketing and writing jobs. Luckily my efforts have started to pay off after several months. The work has been sporadic, but I know I’m on the right track.

So, in my shot at a more creative career, I’ve had to break out of the traditional path and break into the unknown. What have I been doing? Here’s the breakdown!

Marketing and PR: I’ve had the rare and interesting chance to work with family on a women’s shoe business. I found that I liked, and more importantly, I am actually good at public relations. This came as a surprise, as I’ve always had somewhat of a reserved personality. After some initial hesitation, I realized that I love connecting with strangers and reaching out to the media to promote this little known footwear company, which is growing bigger by the minute. It’s also nice to see the fruits of my labor in the success of the company, with press articles and television segments.

Writing: As a longtime food writer, I’ve only dabbled in this field as a hobby. I know that writing professionally is highly competitive and I never really saw it as a viable career choice. It was just something I did for fun, because I like creating recipes, eating and writing, hence this blog. I was lucky to get a few opportunities and now I have a fun list of  published articles in Men’s Health. Which is really exciting to me, because as you can guess- before this I was never a regular reader.

Some tips on pursuing your dreams, or at least venturing into a career change?

  • Branch out and discover what you actually like and what you are good at doing.
  • Get better at it, take classes, seek out a mentor, get tips, ask questions!
  • Start doing things differently, take chances and step out of your normal routine.
  • Be verbal and tell people what you’ve been doing, even if you aren’t sure what that is just yet. It will help you figure out what it is you want to be doing.
  • Make connections. Surround yourself with people that can point you in the right direction and learn from them.
  • Be consistent and constant! Keep doing things. Hustle.

Remember, if you don’t do anything, nothing will happen!
